Commending Rada Owen.

Patrons-- Nixon, Cox, Ingram, McClure, Reid and Ware; Senators: Martin and Watkins

WHEREAS, Rada Owen, a native of Chesterfield and a former member of the Poseidon Swim Team, was a member of the U.S. Olympic Swim Team that competed at the 2000 Summer Games in Sydney; and

WHEREAS, a 1996 honors graduate of Manchester High School in Chesterfield County, Rada Owen matriculated at Auburn University, where she has excelled as a student and athlete; and

WHEREAS, Rada Owen captured many championships and honors at Poseidon and was the Junior National Champion in the 400-meter individual medley in 1994; and

WHEREAS, the 1995-96 Virginia Female Swimmer of the Year, Rada Owen continued her winning ways at Auburn University; and

WHEREAS, while a member of Auburn's Dean's List and the Southeastern Conference Honor Roll, Rada Owen is a six-time Southeastern Conference swimming champion and holds the Auburn University record in the 200-meter freestyle; and

WHEREAS, Rada Owen was a member of the U.S. Team in the 1999 World University Games, where she won a gold medal as part of the 800-meter freestyle relay team; and

WHEREAS, a champion swimmer since the age of eight, Rada Owen capped her swimming career with a second-place finish in the 200-meter freestyle at the U.S. Olympic Trials, which made her a qualifier for the 2000 Sydney Olympics; and

WHEREAS, since her Olympic experience, Rada Owen has returned twice to Chesterfield to share her experiences with younger swimmers, for whom she is an outstanding role model as swimmer, student, and citizen; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Rada Owen for her exceptional athletic success on the local, state, national, and international levels; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Rada Owen as an expression of the General Assembly's congratulations and best wishes in Athens in 2004.
