Summary:
Prescriptions in excess of recommended dosage. Confirms and restates physicians' authority to prescribe dosages of pain-relieving agents which are adequate to handle acute and cancer pain. This bill restates the existing authority for this practice provided in 54.1-3408.1 in a new section within the General Standards of Practice article of the Board of Medicine. The Board of Medicine will be required to advise physicians of this law and the provisions of 54.1-3408.1.

This bill is a recommendation of the Joint Subcommittee Studying the Commonwealth's Current Laws and Policies Related to Acute and Cancer Pain Management. One of the issues identified by the Joint Subcommittee is the reluctance of physicians to prescribe adequate dosages of pain killers for patients suffering with severe pain. This bill is intended to clarify and profile the existing law.
