HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 843
Commending the Virginia Council for Private Education on the occasion of its 35th anniversary.

WHEREAS, the Virginia Council for Private Education was organized on January 22, 1974, as the Virginia affiliate of the national Council for American Private Education; and

WHEREAS, the Virginia Council for Private Education was established to provide a framework for communication and cooperation among various groups of private elementary and secondary schools, between such schools and their public school counterparts, and among private schools and various branches and agencies of state and local governments and other state organizations; and

WHEREAS, the Virginia Council for Private Education was organized to encourage a vigorous diversity in education; to enhance opportunities for families to have choices among schools for their children; to encourage a broad public commitment to excellence in education; and to encourage private schools to share more closely in the state's education efforts; and

WHEREAS, the Virginia Council for Private Education serves as the principal source of information on private education in Virginia to members of the General Assembly, the Board of Education, and the Department of Education—as well as the general public; and

WHEREAS, the Virginia State Board of Education ceased accrediting nonpublic schools, and at its meeting on April 25, 1985, approved recommendations establishing the relationship between nonpublic schools and the Department of Education; and

WHEREAS, in 1985 and officially effective on July 1, 1987, the Board of Education recognized the accrediting process for nonpublic schools as administered through the Virginia Council for Private Education primarily for the purpose of public school acceptance of credits earned by students who attended such nonpublic schools when they transfer and for any other such purposes which may, from time to time, be specified by the Code of Virginia or as may be mutually agreed upon by the Board of Education and the Virginia Council for Private Education; and

WHEREAS, the Department of Education, since the closing of its private school office, has maintained and fostered an ongoing and collaborative relationship with the Virginia Council for Private Education; and

WHEREAS, on November 15, 1993, the Board of Education formally adopted a resolution confirming the longstanding relationship with the Virginia Council for Private Education; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend the Virginia Council for Private Education on the occasion of its 35th anniversary of service to the nonpublic schools of Virginia; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Virginia Council for Private Education as an expression of the General Assembly's appreciation for its many contributions to education in Virginia.
