HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 930
Commending David R. Goode.

WHEREAS, David R. Goode, the chairman and chief executive officer of Norfolk Southern Corporation, was named 2005 Railroader of the Year by railway industry trade journal Railway Age; and

WHEREAS, a native Virginian, David Goode has headed Norfolk Southern since 1992 and is the 42nd recipient of the prestigious Railroader of the Year award and only the fourth person to win it twice; and

WHEREAS, a graduate of Duke University, David Goode earned a law degree from Harvard University, where he also attended the Advanced Management Program at the Harvard Business School; and

WHEREAS, Railway Age cited Norfolk Southern as the "best-performing of the U.S. Class 1's" and noted that the company's stock outperformed the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the Dow Jones U.S. Railroad Average; and

WHEREAS, under the leadership of David Goode, Norfolk Southern has won an unprecedented 15 Harriman Gold safety awards in a row, further evidence of "sound management and a disciplined approach to operations, combined with solid forecasting and planning"; and

WHEREAS, Norfolk Southern is one of the nation's premier transportation companies, operates the most extensive intermodal network in the East, and is the largest carrier of automotive parts and finished vehicles in North America; and

WHEREAS, the current success and future prosperity of Norfolk Southern Corporation, a vital part of the Hampton Roads economy, are due in no small part to the management skills of David Goode; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend David R. Goode on being named 2005 Railroader of the Year; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to David R. Goode as an expression of the General Assembly's congratulations and appreciation for his notable and ongoing professional achievements.
