Commending the Waterford Foundation, Inc.

WHEREAS, founded in 1943, the Waterford Foundation, Inc., has for 60 years worked to preserve the historic buildings and open spaces of the National Historic Landmark District of Waterford; and

WHEREAS, located in Loudoun County, the Village of Waterford is a uniquely valuable resource, with its 18th and 19th century buildings, its historic character, and its well-known crafts; and

WHEREAS, the Waterford Foundation established Virginia's oldest juried crafts fair, the Waterford Homes Tour and Crafts Exhibit, which is also celebrating its 60th anniversary; and

WHEREAS, the Waterford Foundation has directly preserved and protected 17 historic buildings in Waterford and has indirectly helped to preserve and protect scores of others; and

WHEREAS, the Waterford Foundation has played a leading role in the effort to secure the designation of the Village of Waterford as the Waterford Historic District under Loudoun County's Historic and Cultural Conservation District ordinance; and

WHEREAS, in the 1960s, the Waterford Foundation expanded the scope of its mission to include the protection of agricultural land and open space surrounding Waterford, working with the National Park Service to designate 1,420 acres of land within and surrounding the village as the Waterford National Historic Landmark; and

WHEREAS, the Waterford Foundation sponsors public education activities through its lecture series, concert series, and annual classes held at the historic 1867 Second Street School building; and

WHEREAS, due in large part to the efforts of the Waterford Foundation, the historic Village of Waterford and its surrounding area will be preserved for the benefit of all Virginians; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the Waterford Foundation, Inc., on the occasion of its 60th anniversary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Eric Breitkreutz, executive director of the Waterford Foundation, Inc., as an expression of the congratulations and best wishes of the General Assembly.
