WHEREAS, Julie Nixon Eisenhower has lectured extensively throughout the United States on the Presidency, life in the White House, women in politics, the Cold War, and leadership; and

WHEREAS, an assistant managing editor of the Saturday Evening Post from 1973 to 1975, Julie Nixon Eisenhower helped establish a book division for the Curtis Publishing Company and edited a series of anthologies and children's books; and

WHEREAS, a graduate of Smith College who earned her master's degree from the Catholic University of America, Julie Nixon Eisenhower has written three books, including the best-selling Pat Nixon: The Untold Story; and

WHEREAS, Julie Nixon Eisenhower is also a lifelong volunteer who during the Nixon Administration devoted her efforts to children, the elderly, and the environment; and

WHEREAS, Julie Nixon Eisenhower was voted four times by Good Housekeeping magazine readers as one of the Ten Most Admired Women in America; and

WHEREAS, Julie Nixon Eisenhower has long been an advocate for special needs children, serving on the boards of the National Adoption Center and Philadelphia's Please Touch Museum for Children; and

WHEREAS, in 1991, Julie Nixon Eisenhower was named a Distinguished Daughter of Pennsylvania for her community service; and

WHEREAS, currently, Julie Nixon Eisenhower is on the boards of the Center for Judaic Studies at the University of Pennsylvania, the Eisenhower Medical Center, and the Richard Nixon Library and Birthplace Foundation and serves on the advisory board of the Nixon Center, an independent foreign policy think tank; and

WHEREAS, Julie Nixon Eisenhower's volunteer efforts since 1988 have been devoted to Jobs for America's Graduates, a nationwide organization that helps at-risk youth graduate from high school and eases their transition into employment or post-secondary education; and

WHEREAS, Virginia's program, Jobs for Virginia's Graduates, operates in 14 cities and counties and was awarded the "5 of 5" award in 2002 for its successful performance, the highest award presented by Jobs for America's Graduates; and

WHEREAS, in 2002, President Bush named Julie Nixon Eisenhower chair of the President's Commission on White House Fellowships, which fosters leadership in our nation's most exceptional young adults; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Julie Nixon Eisenhower for her manifold contributions to the nation and welcome her to the General Assembly; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Julie Nixon Eisenhower as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration and best wishes.
