Commending the John Handley High School boys' track and field team.

WHEREAS, the 2002 John Handley High School boys' track and field team captured the Virginia High School League Group AA state track and field championship for the third consecutive year; and

WHEREAS, the John Handley boys' track and field team, which also won the Northwestern District and Region II titles, has now won 19 state track and field championships; and

WHEREAS, the 2002 Handley track and field team was led by Bobby Lockhart, who won first place in the 800-meter, 1600-meter and 3200-meter events, and by Marcel Long, Richard Myers, John Thompson, Tony Marrero, and Thomas Wingenbach, all of whom placed in the state meet; and

WHEREAS, also contributing to John Handley's state championship season were Chris Anders, Tony Cahill, James Harris, Robert Verdecchia, Danny Lively, Michael Lee, Kyle Moler, Erik Mellenius, Greg Gaynor, Andrew Tremoulis, Larry Dawson, and Josh Thompson; and

WHEREAS, John Handley's 2002 state title was the sixth under Head Coach Derek Dowrey, who was ably assisted by Scott Burns, Larry Kusko, and Vincent Finley; and

WHEREAS, in winning the state championship, the Handley High School boys’ track and field team once again represented the City of Winchester with talent, teamwork, and a commitment to excellence; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly commend and congratulate the boys' track and field team from John Handley High School on its outstanding 2002 season; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Head Coach Derek Dowrey in honor of the championship performance of the John Handley High School boys' track and field team.
