Commending the City of Virginia Beach on its 40th anniversary.

Patrons-- Stolle, Blevins, Miller, Y.B., Rerras and Wagner; Delegates: Drake, McDonnell, Purkey, Sears, Suit, Tata, Wardrup and Welch

WHEREAS, in 1963, the resort town of Virginia Beach was merged with the County of Princess Anne to form the City of Virginia Beach; and

WHEREAS, 40 years later, the City of Virginia Beach is the most populous city in the Commonwealth, with a population exceeding 425,000; and

WHEREAS, the City of Virginia Beach, a popular resort destination for more than 120 years, plays a major role in the economic progress of the Hampton Roads area; and

WHEREAS, with four military installations--Oceana Naval Air Station, Little Creek, Fort Story, and Dam Neck--the City of Virginia Beach also plays a vital role in the nation's military defense; and

WHEREAS, with local museums, sports and entertainment arenas, a booming oceanfront area, and a thriving economic base, the City of Virginia Beach continues to be one of the most vital and important cities in the Commonwealth; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly congratulate the City of Virginia Beach on the occasion of its 40th anniversary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Meyera E. Oberndorf, Mayor of the City of Virginia Beach, as an expression of the congratulations and continued best wishes of the General Assembly of Virginia.
