Commending Darrell Green.

WHEREAS, Darrell Green, a seven-time All-Pro defensive back for the Washington Redskins, played in three Super Bowls and was the recipient of numerous awards during his 20-year career; and

WHEREAS, Darrell Green was named the World's Fastest Athlete in 1991, was four-times named the National Football League's Fastest Man, holds the record for the most seasons (19) with at least one interception and the most seasons played with one team (20), and was named the NFL Man of the Year and won the Bart Starr and Ken Houston Humanitarian Awards; and

WHEREAS, Darrell Green, a 15-year resident of Loudoun County, has dedicated his life to helping youth and strengthening families by establishing the Darrell Green Youth Life Foundation in 1988, the cornerstones of which are the Darrell Green Learning Centers; and

WHEREAS, the Darrell Green Learning Centers provide comprehensive after-school and summer academic enrichment, combined with a values-based curriculum to help children 5 to 18 years of age, while providing their parents with parenting classes and career and job training, ensuring the skills and providing the confidence needed to be successful; and

WHEREAS, Darrell Green serves on the Loudoun Education Foundation, has helped to establish a Learning Center in Berryville, Virginia, and will soon open a Learning Center in Richmond, with others following in locations throughout Northern Virginia including Herndon; and

WHEREAS, Darrell Green founded the Darrell Green Business Council for Youth, bringing together business leaders from Virginia, as well as surrounding areas, to utilize their expertise in support of youth; and

WHEREAS, Darrell Green completed his bachelor of science degree in general studies and social sciences at St. Paul's College in Lawrenceville and has been recognized for his extraordinary humanitarian endeavors by both Marymount University and St. Paul's College, which conferred upon him honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters degrees; and

WHEREAS, Darrell Green and his wife, Jewell, have raised their three children, Jerrell, Jared, and Joi, in Loudoun County; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Darrell Green as an outstanding Virginian for his tireless efforts on behalf of and passionate commitment to strengthening the families and children of the Commonwealth and to recognize his loyalty upon his retirement from the Washington Redskins; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, that the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Darrell Green as an expression of the General Assembly's appreciation for his outstanding devotion to the children and families of Virginia.
