SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 39

Commending the Poquoson High School Odyssey of the Mind team.

WHEREAS, Odyssey of the Mind is a creative problem-solving competition for children from elementary school to college-age; and

WHEREAS, Odyssey of the Mind teams choose one of several problems and then design a skit that offers a solution; and

WHEREAS, the Odyssey of the Mind team from Poquoson High School competed with teams from across the United States and from China, Russia, and Hungary in the Odyssey of the Mind world competition in Maryland; and

WHEREAS, the Poquoson High School Odyssey of the Mind team's problem was to build a structure out of balsa wood, weighing little more than a pound, that was designed to support as much weight as possible; and

WHEREAS, the Poquoson High School team's structure supported 1,535 pounds, which exceeded the world record, set in 1994, by nearly 70 pounds; and

WHEREAS, the Poquoson High School students on the Odyssey of the Mind team were Bryan Dezern, Joel Sanderson, Kelsey Boitnott, Kyle Tom, Sarah Taliaferro, and Ronnie Parikh; and

WHEREAS, in winning the Odyssey of the Mind world championship, the Poquoson High School students brought honor and recognition to themselves, their school, and the Commonwealth; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly commend and congratulate the Poquoson High School Odyssey of the Mind team on its outstanding performance in world competition; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Poquoson High School Odyssey of the Mind team in recognition of its exceptional achievements.
